I woke up Sunday morning two weeks ago and could barely move. When I did finally get up to walk, I was like a wind-up doll going from room to room in the house. I had played flag football the day before, and apparently there are quite a few muscles that I hadn't used in a while. Pain was an understatement at this point. When I finally made it from the bedroom to the living room, I immediately dropped on the couch. I had come to a horrible realization: I am old and out of shape.
This is a pretty sad state for someone who is 27 years old and considers himself in at least average shape. Back in high school I was certainly not what you consider an athlete, but I played a few sports and always was up for some pick-up hoops or a game of football. In college there were numerous intramural options for me at all levels. In one calendar year I participated in organized football, soccer, basketball, broomball, softball and frisbee. Quite a lot to do!
Right after college, all these activities and opportunities disappeared. Sure, there are a few men's basketball leagues in the area, but they are filled with guys that were all-state in high school and played in college. It's the same for hockey and soccer. As fun as it is to go and play against a guy like Germain Mopa Njila, it kind of sucks at the same time to be lit up like General Electric.
This is why I was excited when Louis came up to me with the idea for Game On. To me it would be great if someone put together some of the similar opportunities available to me be back in college with competition at all levels and a variety of sports to choose from. I think Game On really fills a niche for those who finish college and are still looking to stay active. That way they aren't like me, five years later, feeling like I just got hit by a freight train after a game of flag football.
